Orders and shipping

When will my order ship?

Orders with fresh rhizomes or plant starts ship on Monday (Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday) during our spring and fall seasons. Orders without fresh items ship year-round, within 2 to 3 business days.

See the upcoming ship dates.

What is the order cutoff?

We must receive fresh orders by Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern for them to ship the following Monday. Orders placed after that ship the Monday of the next week.

Why do fresh orders ship only on Mondays?

Shipping at the start of the week means your rhizomes and plants travel Monday through midweek and are never stuck in a carrier facility over a weekend.

How is my order shipped?

Every order ships by USPS Priority Mail. Fresh rhizomes and plant starts are packed with insulated cold packs. You’ll get a tracking email when your order ships.

I ordered fresh and non-fresh items together. When does it ship?

The whole order ships together on the next fresh-shipping Monday. If you’d like the other items sooner, place them as a separate order.

Do you ship during the holidays?

We pause fresh shipments during the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Fresh orders placed during the Thanksgiving break ship on the first Monday after it. Orders without fresh items may take a little longer during these weeks.

Do you ship outside the United States?

Not at the moment. If you’re outside the U.S., send us a message and we’ll let you know whether we can help.

Seasons and plant starts

When are fresh rhizomes and plant starts available?

Both ship in spring (March through May) and fall (September through November). Outside those months they show as out of season in the shop, and ordering reopens the week before each season’s first shipment.

Will you ship during a heat wave or freeze?

If extreme heat or a hard freeze is forecast along your package’s route, we’ll hold your entire order until the next available ship date and email you to let you know.

How soon do I need to plant my starts?

Refrigerate them as soon as they arrive and plant them within a week. Our Growing Guide walks you through it.

Can I grow wasabi where I live?

Wasabi needs deep shade, cool temperatures (about 50–60°F is ideal) and steady moisture. If your summers are hot or winters harsh, grow it in a pot you can move. See picking the right spot.

How long until I can harvest?

About two years for a rhizome of 4 to 6 inches. You can pick a few leaves along the way.

Fresh rhizomes

How long does a fresh rhizome keep?

About 2 to 3 weeks in the refrigerator, stored in a closed (not airtight) container with a slightly damp paper towel nearby. Remoisten the towel every few days. See how.

How do I grate it?

Use a very fine grater and work the cut end in slow circles. Grate just before serving: the flavor is at its best for about 15 minutes. Full instructions.

Can I eat the leaves and stems?

Yes. The whole plant is edible, with a milder wasabi flavor in the greens. Ideas here.

Can I freeze it?

We don’t recommend freezing a whole rhizome; it changes the texture. Store it in the refrigerator and grate only what you need.
